Zia-ul-Haq was born in Jalandhar, British India, in 1924. After independence, Zia joined the newly formed Pakistan Army as a major.

On 1 March 1976, Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto approved Zia-ul-Haq as Chief of Army, ahead of a number of more senior officers. General Zia assumed the office of President of Pakistan on 16 September 1978.

General Zia-ul-Haq died in a plane crash on 17 August 1988. A board of inquiry was set up to investigate the crash.

Various private investigations were also conducted to find out whether the plane crash was a technical fault or a criminal act of sabotage perpetrated in the aircraft.

One of the reports, prepared by an American journalist Edward Jay Epstein suggests that that poisonous gases were released which incapacitated the passengers and crew, which would explain why no Mayday signal was given.

The report also discusses some important points like why Zia’s plane ‘Pak One’ was not taken to nearby airbase, as a security measures and why were some civilian technicians allowed to go in and out of the plane unchecked.
