Fifth Death Anniversary of Benazir Bhutto Today

The workers and supporters of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are reaching Garhi Khuda Bux to participate in 5th death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto.

A number of events have been planned by on this occasion while a big public meeting is scheduled at Garhi Khuda Bux which will be addressed by President and Co-Chairman PPP Asif Ali Zardari, Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other leaders of the party.

This would be first public address by Bilawal Bhutto after assuming the top party post. A meeting of PPP Central Executive Committee is also scheduled in the evening.

Benazir Bhutto, the first women Prime Minister of the Muslim world and a great political leader who sacrificed her life for upholding the rights of common man and to ensure political freedom in the country.

The people, especially the devoted workers of Pakistan People’s Party from all over the country, will also visit graves of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the PPP, late Begum Nusrat Bhutto, Mir Murtaza Bhutto and Shahnawaz Bhutto who all are buried in Garhi Khuda Bux.

Special security arrangements have been made on this occasion and extra security forces have been deployed for this purpose.

Despite five years of her assassination, the PPP government has failed to bring the perpetrators to the book. Various investigations were conducted even by the United Nations and Scotland Yard but the case has not reached its logical conclusion.

Benazir Bhutto, was Pakistan’s first female prime minister and the head of the Pakistan People’s Party founded by her father. She confronted all the dictators and continued her political struggle to ensure rights of the masses and revive political and democratic rule in the country.

She remained Prime Minister of Pakistan during 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996. She returned to Pakistan only in 2007 despite threats to her life and continued her political struggle till her death.

The former PM survived an assassination attempt in Karachi when she arrived Pakistan on October 18, 2007 when two explosions occurred shortly after she had landed and left Jinnah International Airport returning from her exile.

Although she was not injured, but the explosions, later found to be a suicide-bomb attack, killed 139 people and injured at least 450. But later on she could not survive in the second attempt on her life when she was attacked by extremists and terrorists element outside Liaqat Bagh on December 27, 2007.
