Private schools, transport operators and traders associations have announced to suspend their activities for a day on the call of Karachi’s largest political party.

Backing the MQM’s call, Private Schools Associations (PAS) kept their schools closed for a day.

Karachi Transport Ittehad, a private body of city transporters, also didn’t bring their vehicles on roads.

In addition, Karachi Tajir Ittehad (KTI) also kept their shutters down for the day.

Peaceful shutter-down strike was also observed in other parts of Sindh including Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Nawabshah, Sangarh, Shahdadpur, Tando Adam and Shahpur Chakar.

Yesterday, MQM activist was found dead in Mochko area of Karachi on Wednesday, triggering tension in parts of the city.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Sohail Ahmed, an activist of MQM’s Society Sector. He had been missing for several days. A case was also registered at Bahadurabad Police Station about his sudden disappearance.

In a press statement, MQM chief Altaf Hussain condemned the “extrajudicial killing of Sohail Ahmed.”

“The number of MQM’s workers killed extra-judicially has reached 36,” Husain said.

Taking notice of the death of MQM’s worker, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali directed chiefs of Sindh police and rangers to submit reports.

“I am saddened by the death of MQM’s worker,” Nisar said, adding that extra-judicial killings won’t be allowed.

Meanwhile, Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo constituted a five-member committee of senior officers to probe the incident.

The committee led by DIG South has been given the task to hold an inquiry into death of Sohail Ahmed. Other members include SSP City, SP Investigation South, DSP and SHO Mochko police station.
