National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an Rs 6.39 per unit raise in the power tariff under fuel adjustment.

A public meeting was held under the NEPRA vice chairman Ghiasuddin on Tuesday. NEPRA approved an increase of Rs2.22 per unit for October 2011; Rs1.27 per unit for November 2011; Rs0.94 per unit for December 2011 and Rs1.96 per unit for January 2012. The NEPRA has increased power tariff by Rs 6.39 against four months of fuel adjustment.

New tariff will be imposed with effect from May 1st and will remain effective till August 31st, 2012.

According to the authority, the fresh hike was made due to raise in furnace oil prices, gas shortage and slide in hydro power generation.

A notification regarding the increase will be issued by NEPRA later.

On the other hand the shortfall of electricity has increased to 7000 megawatt that has increased the load-shedding to 12 hours all over the country.

The load-shedding has seriously affected the life of masses and due to that, stern demonstration has been observed in Faisalabad on Tuesday. The protesters blocked the road, burnt the tyres on Samundari road and broke the window screens of the vehicles and raised the slogans against the FESCO.

Protesters were furious about the closing of factories due to load-shedding and demanded to control it.

Meanwhile the masses also protested in Peshawar and demanded the end to 18 hours load-shedding.
