Police Launches Baton Charge on Protesting Lawyers Outside Supreme Court

The police have launched tear gas shelling and baton charge on a large number of protesting lawyers outside the Supreme Court building in Islamabad this evening, media reports.

A large number of lawyers, belonging to five divisions of Punjab, gathered outside the Supreme Court on Shahrah-e-Dastoor this day and started protest for formation of local benches of the High Court in their areas.

The lawyers turned furious during the protest while chanting slogans for their demands and tried to intrude into the building of the Supreme Court.

The police interfered and did not allow the lawyers to enter in the building and that started a clash between the protesters and law enforcers outside the Supreme Court.

Seeing no other way to control the angry lawyers, the police launched baton charge and tear gas shelling to control the protesters.

Many lawyers and security men including the Assistant Commissioner of city sustained injuries in the encounter while glasses of the Supreme Court building were also damaged partially by the stoning of the protesters.

The lawyers were yet protesting, till filing of this report, for their demand of forming local benches of the High Court in five divisions of Punjab province including, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, and Gujranwala.
