According to initial reports, the blast took place on Mall Road in one of Peshawar’s sensitive areas where army and government installations are located.

Officials said the car explosion targeted a convoy of Frontier Constabulary.

Three dead bodies and 13 injured were shifted to city’s main Lady Reading hospital, police and rescue officials confirmed.

A security official and a woman were among the dead, said the hospital spokesman, adding that two FC men were among the eight injured.

Bomb disposal squad arrived at the site to ascertain nature of the blast as security forces cordoned off the area.

“It seems that the attacker was driving an explosives-laden car that he rammed with the FC convoy,” CCPO Peshawar Ijaz Khan said while speaking to reporters on the site.

He said at 45 kilogram of explosive material was used in the suspected car blast that he said might be a reaction to military’s ongoing Zarb-e-Azb operation in North Waziristan.

The blast was so powerful that it damaged two vehicles – a rickshaw and a motorbike – and windowpanes of nearby buildings in the area where residents of high military officials are also located.

Another security official said vehicle of a brigadier was target of the suicide attacker. However, the officer remained safe.

Nobody immediately claimed the responsibility for the attack but militants have carried out several such attacks against police and security forces in the city.
