Taliban offer to exchange British hostage for Dr. Aafia

A British newspaper has claimed that a Taliban Commander in Afghanistan has demanded release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a neuroscientist recently incarcerated for 86 years by a US court, in exchange for a British woman welfare worker presently in the captivity of Afghan Taliban.

According to a report carried by a British daily, a commander of local Afghan Taliban have held a British welfare worker hostage and demanded release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui in exchange for setting free the former.

The British daily has quoted the Taliban Commander as claiming that the British aid worker was abducted following the announcement of sentence to Dr. Aafia. The British woman was picked up while she was traveling toward Jalalabad along with three Afghan workers.

It has been the practice of the British government not to pay ransom for release of their nationals. However, the US authorities and British government have been in touch on the matter.
