Asserting that they would only add to the administrative cost of governance, that too big time, Co-chairperson Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday night categorically opposed the formation of new administrative units in Pakistan, news reported.

“Pakistan can hardly afford the administration of existing provinces. How will a government, which is already in financial dire straits, bankroll the offices of new ones i.e. chief ministers etc?”, said he during an exclusive interview to Samaa TV’s senior anchorperson Arif Nizami.

Replying to a question, Zardari doubted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Imran Khan’s political maturity.

“Khan has not come of political age as yet. He needs to grow up as a politician as well as revisit the style of his politics”, the PPP leader said.

To another, he said it wasn’t Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif who contacted PPP for political consultation in the wake of PTI and Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s long march and subsequent protest sit-in outside Parliament House.

“It was rather PPP, which, being alive to its political responsibilities, reached out to the prime minister to extend whatever help it could to defuse the political crisis that is taking a terrible toll on the economy as well as democracy”, Zardari told Samaa.

Taking a exception to the government’s suppressive actions against the protesting parties, Zardari, however, stressed that political tolerance was the need of hour.

“Didn’t PPP face massive political roadshows back in the day? Didn’t we negotiate with Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s Dr Tahirul Qadri? Didn’t we put up with all the political rivals without resorting to confrontational measures? If we can do it, so can Nawaz government”, said Zardari.

He further said that had Nawaz asked him for an advice in the given circumstances, his answer would have been ‘tolerate, tolerate, and only tolerate.

A bemused PPP leader was all smiles when he said that everybody knew about Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) supremo Altaf Hussain’s ‘mood swings’, adding this time around too, PPP would successfully bring him round.

“Altaf Bhai knows how to launch a new product in Sindh. We will hopefully change his mood for the better”, said he alluding to MQM leader’s latest campaign for the formation of new administrative units in the country.
