FIA Ordered to Provide Enquiry Report to Pervez Musharraf

The Special Court hearing case of high treason charges against former president Pervez Musharraf ordered Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to provide its enquiry report to the accused, media reported Thursday.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Faisal Arab, resumed hearing of the high-profile case today at Islamabad and directed the FIA to complete the task of handing over of joint investigation report by May 14.

The report is prepared by the agency on steps taken by Pervez Musharraf during his rule.

All relevant documents, testimonials and copies of witnesses would be provided to the former military ruler had sought access to the report for his defence in the legal fight.

Musharraf has been banned from leaving Pakistan as the federal government has refused to remove his name from the Exit Control List (ECL).

The former military ruler is nowadays in Karachi. He arrived in the city from Islamabad last month to undergo some diagnostic tests in Pakistan Navy’s hospital, PNS Shifa.

The 70-year-old Musharraf was indicted in March on charges relating to his imposition of emergency rule in late 2007. The ex-general, who seized power in 1999 and resigned in 2008, has pleaded “not guilty” to the treason charges.

He faces the death penalty if convicted of the charges, under Article 6 of the Constitution.

Musharraf is also on bail in three other major cases linked to his time in power including 2007 assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto in a gun and suicide attack and murder of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti in 2006.
