PTI leads Senate Election Results in KPK

After the polling concluded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the process of counting is underway and unofficial results started to come, news reported on Friday.

According to the first result, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s minority seat candidate Brigadier (retd) John Kenneth Williams has been declared successful. John bagged 70 votes, according to the unofficial results.

Samina Abid, who the PTI tapped on women seats from the KPK, also was declared successful. Samina notched the victory with the help of 66 votes.

According to the third unofficial result, Sitara Ayaz of Awami National Party (ANP) was elected as senator.

The fourth result announced the victory of the PTI’s Nauman Wazir on technocrat seat.

The   PML-N’s Muhammad Javed Abbasi was declared successful on one of two technocrat seats, according to the unofficial results.

On general seats, the PTI’s Shibli Faraz, Liaquat Khan Tarakai and Mohsin Aziz, JUI-F’s Maulana Attaur Rehman, PPP’s Khanzada Khan, PML-N’s Lt. Gen Salahuddin Tirmzi and Jamaat Islami’s ameer Sirajul Haq were declared senators.

KPK voting put on hold over ‘allegations’
It should be mentioned here that polling for 48 seats of Senate concluded at 4pm yesterday in National Assembly and three provincial assemblies except the KPK.

Polling time for KPK Assembly was extended till 8pm after negotiations between opposition and government. Earlier, polling in the KPK assembly was temporarily halted following the objection raised by JUI-F member Mahmood Batni. According to him, the PTI members of the KPK assembly were taking ballot papers out of the assembly hall and affixing certain type of mark on them.

As many as 21 members had already cast their votes when the polling was put on  hold.

It is pertinent to note here that Nighat Orakzai also raised similar objections against members of Jamat-e-Islami.

From KPK, 12 candidates including Haji Muhammad Adeel, Khanzada Khan, Sirajul Haq, Syed Shibli Faraz, Attaur Rehman, Ammar Ahmed Khan, Liaquat Khan Tarakai, Lt Gen Salahuddin Tirmzi, Mohsin Aziz, Manzoor Khan, Noor Alam Khan and Waqar Ahmed Khan are contesting for seven general seats.

Six candidates including Samina Abid, Sitara Ayaz, Shazia Tehmas Khan, Shafia Amjad, Shaheen and Fauzia Fakhar uz Zaman Khan for two seats reserved for women.

Afrasiab Khattak, Abdul Malik, Muhammad Javed Abbasi, Muhammad Hamayun Khan, Muhammad Yaqoob Sheikh and Nauman Wazir for two seats reserved for Ulema / technocrats.

Three candidates i.e. James Iqbal, John Kenneth Williams and Amar Jeet for one seat reserved for minorities.

The election was marred by claims of rigging and horse-trading as a controversial presidential ordinance triggered protest by lawmakers from FATA, prompting Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone voting in National Assembly.

During the polling, which begun at 9.00 am simultaneously in National Assembly and all four provincial assemblies, the legislators cast votes to elect new senators to replace those who retire on completion of their six-year term.

According to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), there were a total of 131 candidates in the fray for representation in the Parliament’s Upper House. Four candidates from Sindh have already been elected unopposed.

During voting MNAs and MPAs cast their votes through secret balloting process.
